12 SKILLS YOU NEED TO HAVE AT THE WORKPLACE

An employee or manager without skills is fruitless. Likewise, any work that does not involve skills is unproductive. No employer would want to recruit a person who has no potential to uphold the progress and good reputation of an individual, agency, or company. Managers, employees, and job seekers should consider and adopt the following workplace skills to grow a company or business. 

1.  Communication

Communication is a key skill everywhere including in workplaces. A worker should be able to listen, talk, or responding their co-workers or clients effectively. Communication is done either verbally or nonverbally. This implies that transferring information in writing or symbols should be clear to prevent any potential negative consequences. At least a worker should know some symbols and know sign language. In some circumstances, you counter with clients with hearing impairment at your workplaces, so it might be unprofessional and embarrassing to fail to handle such people. The worker should also have writing skills to communicate any information about the organization’s operations and management. In addition to writing skills, the worker attains note-taking skills in case he or she representing the organization at an important meeting. It is also recommended that workers should have public speaking skills which can be applied before a large diverse audience.  Despite how professional a worker is; communication matters the most. Note that with the adventure of technology, professional communication skills might also be employed in virtual communication.

2.  Interpersonal communication skills

Interpersonal communication is face-to-face communication that takes place between people who exchange feelings, emotions, or any information either verbally or nonverbally or, both. Face-to-face communication requires one’s attention, activeness, listening, and speaking ability. A worker should be able to listen to the client with a sense of understanding, patience, and empathy. he or she must ensure eye contact with whom they are talking. Good work should not annoy clients or co-workers. 

3.  Time management

Any organization has a working schedule. However, the schedule might be affected by the urgency and importance of the project at hand. Time management is a priority of every workplace or agency to prioritize efficiency within the management of the organization. Workers are supposed to arrive at the workplace on time, work according to the schedule and finish their projects on the deadline.  As a worker, you should also consider time management for the good of the clients or customers.

4.  Decision-making and Problem-solving skills

Making a rational decision at times of adverse is what every worker should adopt to perpetuate the best interests of both the company and the audience or clients. Probably, employers look for potential employees with decision-making skills to help solve problems that might arise at their workplace. For instance, decision-making skills are becomes highly demanded when conflicts arise at the workplace, or there are inconveniences marring operations and the reputation of the organization.     

5.  Confidence

Confidence is a positive feeling or perception about one’s talents, and skills. Self-confidence enables one to accomplish what one wants in their life. A leader should be able to influence, convince, and motivate others to achieve their goal. However, leadership requires one’s confidence for a change to occur. It depends on the profession whether you need self-confidence or not but any profession requires confidence to fulfill its mission. The worker should not look down upon himself or herself.  

6.  Curiosity and learning

Sometimes as human beings, we always want to know more about some occurrences, inconveniences, and even our roles as workers. This means that human beings are curious. Curiosity can be manifested through asking questions, researching, or meditating on past experiences.  If you do not understand our role as a professional do not feel embarrassed to ask or speak. Curiosity is imperative in gaining more experience, knowledge, and leadership skills. Be confident to research more as a professional and individual.

7.  Focus

With modernization, workplaces are extremely busy. Especially, when you are working with a computer or mobile phone, you will recurrently be receiving messages, emails, phone calls, beeps, or anything that can be considered a disturbance to your work. A professional, be smart to handle all this and try to concentrate on your task. Otherwise, you can be fired for your unproductive working tendency. It is better to put them in silence during working hours except for important notices. 

8.  Teamwork and collaboration

A spirit of hard work, integrity, and good leadership brings people together for a common good. Working together as a team or company on projects, workshops and other extracurricular activities benefits the company and its employees and even clients and audiences.  

9.  Technical skills

A worker should know and stay updated knowledgeably on the usage of software material; computers, tablets, and smartphones, for example. In the modern days, we are working with/using technological tools that demand our knowledge. For instances of data collection, data analysis, and data interpretation, software knowledge is very imperative. Of course, this might depend on the profession.

10.              Self-regulation

Take time to evaluate your core values before or if you feel you are being a disturbance or burden to your co-workers. It is a good time to practice your patience, tolerance, and kindness when co-workers offend you so that can become their example and not a laughingstock.

Self-evaluation will help to build or improve good values in you. Later your good values will affect your productivity at work and your good relationship with your co-workers (with the organization) and clients.

11.              Creativity

Through creativity workers (employees and managers) come up with new ways and innovations for improving the working environment and productivity. At the workplace, creativity can be manifested in collaborative work, focusing on your tasks, working independently, etc.  

12.              Critical thinking

A critical thinker can make rational decisions, is creative, and has problem-solving skills. They have a sensitive impact on the management and operations of the company and its future. A company or organization with great employees and managers maintains the pronounceable prosperity of the company. 

It is the priority of any employer to look for individuals who contain at least several qualities I have discussed for the upward mobility of the company. It is, therefore, everyone’s recommendation to consider such factors so that you stand a chance of employment and continue working for your company.
