Exploring Key Features of Cat6a Plenum Cable

Cat6a Plenum Cable is one of the most popular Ethernet cables that is being widely used in commercial as well as residential installations. What makes this cable a very sought-after product? Let’s find out.

The Bulk Cat6a Plenum cable comes with a plenum-rated or CMP-rated jacket. Speaking of ethernet cables, a CMP jacket is like iOS of ethernet cables. An ethernet cable with a CMP-rated jacket has fire-retardant properties. It means that in a case of fire eruption, the cable halts fire progression and also emits no dangerous gases or hazardous elements. It is completely safe for installation.

Here, a question might pop up in your mind: what’s the point of making CMP-rated jackets vis-a-vis fire. The answer is that CMP-rated cables like Plenum Cat6a Cable are designed for installation in the plenum or horizontal spaces of the buildings. A plenum space is a separate space in the buildings that are designed to provide space for air circulation for ventilation, air conditioning, and heating. You can usually trace plenum space under a raised floor, or a drop-down ceiling, or between the structural ceiling.

As these spaces usually have greater atmospheric pressure, the risk of fire eruption here is always very high. Therefore, TIA/EIA standards bind you to always install a CMP-rated cable in plenum spaces.

Lightning-fast data transfer rates

The Bulk Cat6a Plenum cable supports data transfer rates of 10 Gbps up to a distance of 100 meters. This data transfer rate is second only to the one provided by Cat7 cable.

Augmented Bandwidth

The Cat6a cable comes with an augmented bandwidth capacity of 750 MHz.  It means that your signal strength remains intact over longer distances and you enjoy optimum and seamless connectivity.

Bare Copper Conductors

This Cat6a Plenum Cable comes with 8 pure copper conductors that are tightly bundled together in 4 twisted pairs; each twister pair is separated from the other by a spline. In this way, crosstalk is canceled and electromagnetic interference is prevented.

Bare copper conductors also keep your signal strength stronger over long distances and have less attenuation (loss of signal strength). They are better in every manner than CCA (copper-clad aluminum conductors).

The Bulk Cat6a Plenum ethernet cable supports the following applications: 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX Fast Ethernet, 1000BASE-T (IEEE802.3), 100VG-AnyLAN (IEEE802.12), 650 MHz Broadband Video Voice, T1, ISDN 155/ 622 Mbps, and ATM PoE (Power over Ethernet).

It meets the following standards: FCC, CE, CSA, ISO/IES, RoHS, among several others.

These are all the key things that you should know about this amazing ethernet cable.

Shielded & unshielded

To provide an extra layer of protection against crosstalk and to prevent EMI from messing with your signal, Bulk Ethernet Cables often deploy an extra layer or layers of protection in the form of foil sheath that is wrapped around each twisted pair. Some cable manufacturers wrap two rounds of foil sheath: one for each twisted pair and one for all four twisted pairs. Such cables are called shielded twisted pair ethernet cables.

The cables that do not have any extra layer of protection are called unshielded twisted pairs.

Shielded twisted pair cables are installed in harsh environments (spaces where excessive crosstalk or EMI is present) whereas unshielded twisted pair cables are meant for normal environments.

Remember, shielded ethernet cables are much more expensive than unshielded ethernet cables.
